Raleigh (Sue)'s Story

Funny, after all these years......Lately I've been communicating with Mike Glenn who has just joined Classmates. His story post High School is very interesting. We all have had interesting lives post High School and as our 50th reunion is coming up I urge all of the class of 61 to update or write their "story". We will have lots to talk about at the reunion in 2011!!! How on earth did we get to be so mature? After High School I went to MPC for a year mostly taking unwater basket weaving classes and doing the party scene. In 1962 I went to Kaiser Foundation School of Nursing, same school that Sandy Sterle went to. I graduated from Kaiser in 1965 with my Dipolma in nursing and went back to Monterey to work at the Carmel Community Hospital in the Operating Room. A nursing school friend and I worked until the Spring of 66, saved $1000 and sailed off to Europe with Eric Frommers' book 'Europe on $5 a Day' clutched in our hand. While on the P&O ship that we sailed from Calif. to Maderia, we met our future Englsih husbands (we weren't looking for husbands!). I went to London and worked for a year at the Westminster Hospital in the operating room. I returned to Monterey in August 1967 and married my English souvenir in Toronto, Ontario in August of 1968. We had our two kids in Toronto; Stephen (1971) and Susan (1974). In 1975 we moved to the Seattle area and have been here ever since except for three years in San Diego (1980-84). Our kids are now married with children of their own which makes me a proud grandma. Stephen lives in Alaska and works as a photo journalist for the Anchorage Daily news. He h...Expand for more
as two little girls. Susan lives in Redmond not too far from us and has a 3 1/2 year old son and brand new baby girl born March 31st 2008. Some highlights of the past forty-odd years: I went back to school and got my Bachelors' and Master of Nursing from the University of WA. in 1987 and 1989. It was a long haul as I had to redo all my science courses at a community college while working and raising children. In 1993 I climbed Mt. Rainier (14,410 ft.) for my fiftieth birthday and enjoyed the experience so much I did it again the following year. I rowed with a womens' crew for 14 years (1989 to 2003). One of the highlights from those years was a trip to Munich (1998) to row in an International rowing event in which my friend Becky and I placed first in our double. My physical activity now is mostly Yoga, Pilates, walking and hiking. In 1993 I started dabbling with watercolor. I still dabble but periodically sell a painting or two at art shows. I paint mostly for my own pleasure. Alec and I have travelled over the years and enjoy being grandparents. We will have been married forty years in August 2008. We've had a lot of laughs which have made the years fly by and I'm looking forward to more laughs for the next forty! A person I would love to meet again from years ago is Dean Gertrude Rendtorff. She had the occasion to "council" me during my senior year in high school about cutting school and signing my mother's name to my "please excuse" notes. At the time I didn't appreciate her as much as I do now and I'd love to sit down with her to get to know her as a person. She was a very wise woman.
